Finished, for now.

For a long time, most of our attention went into building, changing and refining the truck. There was always another bracket to make, another problem to solve or another idea we wanted to try.

Eventually, though, you have to stop building and start using it.

Windward began as an ex-Army MAN HX60 and has gradually become our home on the road. The exterior was deliberately kept dark and utilitarian, with two of my photographs from Mont Blanc running across the sides of the box. I chose the glacier images partly because they are still some of my favourite photographs, but also because at this scale they become almost abstract, breaking up the large flat surfaces like a kind of camouflage.

Around the back, the rack carries the bikes, recovery boards and the things we want accessible from outside. At the front, the original military cab is still unmistakably there. We never wanted to disguise what the truck was, only give it a different purpose.

There will inevitably be things we change once we’ve lived with it properly. That was always part of the plan. For now, though, the tools can stay packed away.
